Cornell Tunnels
Descending from the heavens
like born-again bats,
we held tight to what we knew best
and let the rest of the world fly by.
Screaming seemed impossible now,
our open throats swallowing up gulps of dry wind,
our tear-streaked cheeks
affixed upwards and onward.
The yellowed caverns below
begged to devour us.
One-by-one-by-one,
we hurtled into and out of their gaping maws.
But you never looked back my friend
and unfortunately for us both, neither did I.
Time stretched like saltwater taffy,
our jaws clenched in split-second anticipation.
I'm over the moon,
Waxing gibbous beckoning me to come back
down,
down,
down.

Everything is still now,
still new to me now.
I wish I knew how,
how I could still know you.
Licking my wounds at midnight,
sweetly dreaming of your flesh.
